Press Release

Date: Feb. 24, 2022
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) filed H.R. 6810, the Housing Our Veterans Act. This legislation will direct the Comptroller of the United States to report on the availability of affordable housing for veterans who have been participating in any program administered by the Department of Veteran Affairs' Homeless Program Office.

"Our veterans put their lives on the line to protect our country and the freedoms that we often take for granted. This legislation is a vital piece of a larger puzzle to ensure that our veterans have access to crucial support systems they are entitled to by the VA," stated Congressman Gonzalez. "Congress must continue to fight for our service members so that no veteran falls through the cracks after they return to civilian life."

The Housing Our Veterans Act would, among other things:

* Remove the cap on training and technical assistance provided by the Homeless Program Office
* Codify and expand the pandemic-era health care navigators program
* Create a pilot program for increasing homeless veteran's access to substance-use disorder recovery programs in the community
* Create a pilot program for providing medical care to veterans in transitional housing
